Uploading a Syllabus

Open the Syllabus link in the course menu

Build Content Tab

File or Item?

  • File creates a direct link to the document
  • Item creates an attachment to the document allows text
    • Creates a level of links that may break

File > Name > Browse > upload from computer

  • Open in a New Window?
  • This opens a new browser tab to display the document
  • If not, document opens in Blackboard content area

Item > Name > Text box for message or instructions > Attach document


  • DOCX requires that the Word Program be open
    • Students must have the program on their device
    • Gives the student the opportunity to edit the document
    • Browser opens a dialogue box to open Word
    • In Chrome this appears in the bottom left corner, many students miss it
    • Use DOCX if you need the student to interact with the document
      • Student contract, worksheets, tables, etc…
    • Easily manipulated for accessibility
  • PDF opens in Blackboard regardless of device programs
    • Ally allows student to download in various format for accessibility
